Building a solid foundation that encompasses love, faith and knowledge is something that parents strive for from the moment their child is born and continuing through the years that follow. It is a task that is never completely finished as it continues on when those children become adults who then begin to build that same foundation with their own children. The task of building this foundation is also a difficult one.
As parents, we are facing a daunting mission of raising our children in a world that seems to have misplaced its love for God. We work tirelessly to instill an understanding in our children of the importance of things like having compassion for others and choosing kindness above all else. Yet the television, newspaper and internet headlines are full of the exact opposite. We see anger and hatred for elected officials. We watch riots take place, shootings occur in schools and places of business and the physical mistreatment of others simply because one or more person feels a sense of entitlement to impose their personal beliefs on everyone and openly seek vengeance when someone disagrees with that view.
Our children see and hear these things taking place in their world despite our best efforts to shield them from such exposure. For that reason, it is essential that we, as their parents, arm ourselves with every possible tool to reinforce their love for God. Here is where Danielle Hitchen steps in with her book ‘Bible Basics: A Baby Believer Counting Primer’.
The primary focal point of this book is teaching young children to count from one to ten. However, that aspect only begins to scratch the surface of the lessons children can find in this book. Each page of this book is a colorful presentation of a number, a visual representation of how that number relates to God’s word and a short Bible verse description. Jessica Blanchard illustrates the images in such a way as to easily capture the attention of any toddler sitting on a parent’s lap as the book is being read out loud. Danielle then adds the inspiring words of a relevant Bible verse to further highlight the invaluable lesson for children and parents alike throughout the book.
It is a book that parents can easily read with their children on a daily basis. Doing so paves the way for young children to establish their essential number recognition skills. The repetition of Bible verses and correlation of God’s love for our world will help foster a child’s deeper understanding of the Christian faith as well.
The board book presentation allows parents to stash the book in a diaper bag, backpack, purse or other bag so they can easily entertain their children as they move about their day. Parents of young children will love how the durability of the book can withstand the vigorous nature of an active toddler in the backseat of the car or in a stroller. Young children can turn the pages with ease and parents don’t have to worry about pages enduring damage in the process.
In reviewing this book the one aspect that I love the most is learning that older children can benefit from the book as well. My 11 year old daughter has read through the book several times and finds it to be an inspiration for herself and others. Being older, she is able to comprehend the written passages in a way that younger children might not be able to grasp quite yet. However, I am confident that consistent exposure to this book will make that happen in no time.
One of my favorite pages in the book is the ‘Beatitudes’ page. I have a basic understanding of the eight beatitudes due to the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, or CCD, classes I took when I was younger. My first thought upon seeing these words alongside a picture of growing flowers is that when we nurture these things in ourselves and in others, we can all grow together through the word of God!
I highly recommend that parents, grandparents, soon-to-be-parents, Sunday school teachers and anyone else who would like to share God’s word with children pick up a copy of this book today! It is available now at an affordable price of $9.99 from Catechesis Books or Amazon.
